Michael has over ten years working as a medical social worker. He spent many of those years working as a hospice social worker, in which he supervised and directed teams of social workers. During that time he honed his skills in helping families understand complex medical issues, confusing government benefits, and the emotional challenges of caring for a loved one with various medical needs.

As a licensed clinical social worker Michael has extensive understanding of mental health diagnosis and their treatments. Additionally, Michael takes a holistic approach to helping his clients and their loved ones. He has also helped people achieve a renewed sense of peace in facing their healthcare needs through the use of his training in clinical hypnotherapy. He has developed several audio tracks for stress relief and pain reduction.

Philip Rafshoon is Program Director for the AJC DBF. He manages the team that curates featured authors and events at the festival. With a BS in Management from Ga. Tech, he spent ten years in corporate sales. He then opened and operated Atlanta’s Outwrite Bookstore and Coffeehouse, a venue for a diverse array of literary events and an unofficial LGBT community center. Philip has been involved in a broad range of community organizations including the advisory committee of the American Booksellers Association.

Daphne Reiley is the founder of Ripples of Grace, a consulting practice meeting communities of faith in their mission to include the isolated.  Daphne has found that isolation takes many forms and that communities of faith, in particular, should be but are often not very good at meeting the needs of  isolated individuals and families.

Ripples of Grace provides education to organizations desiring to better address ways of reaching out to isolated populations. Daphne offers workshops to professional organizations as well as communities of faith.  She also facilitates retreats for pastors, congregational leaders, and groups of individuals.

Along with her favorite co-author Joseph LaGuardia, she is working on a companion book to their previously published “A Tapestry of Love, the Spirituality of Caregiving”.  The work in progress – “Taking It to Heart” –  is a book aimed at those receiving long-term care.

GeorgiaCares is a volunteer-based program that provides free, unbiased and factual information and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. GeorgiaCares is the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) and SMP (formerly Senior Medicare Patrol).

Local assistance is available for health insurance related issues including Medicare, Medicaid, financial assistance programs, health error, fraud and abuse and long term care insurance. The GeorgiaCares program is statewide. Services are provided through the twelve (12) Area Agencies on Aging (AAA). For information on your local AAA, call 1-866-552-4464 (option 4).

???????????????????????????????The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) was founded in 1961 to facilitate patient and family support, medical research and education. APDA carries out its mission through a network of chapters, Information & Referral Centers and affiliated support groups which provide education, counseling, assistance and referrals throughout the United States. There are now 65 chapters, 62 Information & Referrals Centers and more than 250 affiliated support groups from coast to coast. The Atlanta Chapter was chartered in 1985 to further the mission of APDA in the Atlanta area. The chapter was then changed to the Georgia Chapter in 2002.

The American Parkinson Disease Association has placed a vast emphasis on grassroots organizing of Information and Referral Centers, chapters and support groups. Since the initiation of Operation Outreach in 1983, the number of chapters, their efficiency, and the funds they have raised have grown dramatically. It is this grassroots structure that distinguishes APDA from other organizations serving people with Parkinson’s disease.

An estimated 1.5 million Americans have Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is a slowly progressive brain disorder resulting in the loss of dopamine production. Dopamine is the neuro-transmitter responsible for aiding in body movements. Symptoms include slowness of movement, tremor, muscle stiffness, and postural instability. To date there is no cure.

After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Wayne Huey continues to serve as a teacher and counselor and live a very active lifestyle. Wayne’s tips for coping with Parkinson’s:

1. Stay active and engaged both physical and mentally
2. Find a doctor who specializes in PD or movement disorders
3. Connect with others, keep communication open
4. Don’t let PD define who you are
5. Join a support group
6. Participate in clinical trials
